Beginning the Job Search

Having a major in Interdisciplinary Studies with minors in Child and Family Studies, I have much interest in family counseling.  After much searching, I have stumbled upon many job opportunities that would allow me to follow through with a career (or at least temporary job) with my major.  Some of the selections prefer or require a Master’s degree which I would need to obtain upon completion of my undergraduate degree.  However, enough interest in these positions would give me enough determination to continue with my education and obtain a Master’s degree in either of my minors, or a different major.
The first job opportunity is one that favors a Master’s degree.  However, this particular position requires a worker that is responsible for counseling mainly the elderly and their family in their communication and interaction with one another.  The application and more information for this job can be found at the following site:
The second job opportunity involves working with families who have had individuals reside at Odyssey Hospice, Inc.  Part of the work involved with this group would be tending to the patients at this facility, as well as helping their families to cope with the current situation.  This position only requires a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or Counseling from a major university (which the University of Southern Mississippi is).  More information on this particular position can be found at the following website:
Another job opportunity that I managed to find was that of a Family Services Worker at the Head Start Program in Jackson, Mississippi.  The basis of this position is to help get children off to the right start in their education and keep them and their families in a nurturing environment by providing consistent counseling.  A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Degree and a valid Mississippi Social Work License with two years experience in social work is required for work at this position.  I would need to obtain my Mississippi Social Work License, but the reward from helping families would be enough to drive me to work towards that goal as well.  A little more about this job is found at the following:
A final job opportunity that I was able to locate is working at either St. Dominic’s Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, or possibly at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison, Mississippi (this branch is also run by St. Dominic’s).  The workers who are a part of this environment help reach out to individuals who are suffering from cancer and heart problems among other conditions.  In order to be eligible for this job, a current Mississippi License and Mississippi degree in Social Work is required.  At the following website, a full description of all the jobs offered and necessary are found:
I have found that all of the previous jobs are seeking people who have a passion for helping others, particularly those that are going through difficult times in their lives.  Working for hospitals is more demanding, but at the same time it can be more rewarding.  By simply showing my passion for wanting to reach out to people with those needs would be a cornerstone to proving that I am a good candidate for one of these jobs.  If more schooling is necessary to be able to achieve such a goal, then I may have to continue with my education.  However, in the end, all the hard work is worth the reward.
Of all the jobs that are mentioned, the one that I would want the most would be working with families and getting them started in the right direction in life.  I grew up in a family where my path was not laid out before me, however I have made it this far in life (and in school).  There are many people, particularly children, in this world who can amount to so much if they just know where to start and which direction to go.  Being able to be the catalyst for such a future and watch and be with the parents of those children as they succeed is more of a reward than anything else I can fathom.  A smile on a child’s and parent’s face makes all the schooling, time, pain, and obstacles worth the effort - I am very willing to make any sacrifices necessary.

The writer in this paper is discussing two different topics they are discussing things about coaching and also they talk about child and family studies. The author addresses issues with both topics starting with coaching then talking about child and family studies. The author gives context about why is it that they are so interested in both fields while giving accounts that brought them to deciding on both these minors. What I know about the topic is it seems to be a very touchy one for the author and I myself have been in similar situations that help me relate to this author. The topic raises many issues as of how big the influences of coaches and mentors have on the development of children. The author brought up good points in how the foundation a child receives in the things they are taught play a big role in the person that child will become and how with more mentors and people willing to give time to those children without stable homes and without a positive role model the more the world can benefit as a whole. The topics that the author talk about seem to be topics that can be debated but I believe the author drew more on their own experiences then the influences of others.  The author seems to believe that the world is at stake that if there is no foundation set for the people of tomorrow (children) then our society as a whole will parish. The author believes that while coaching they can give children the foundations in tools needed to succeed in life and not just in sports. The author of this paper is Ke’Airra Jones who is a junior IDS major at the University of Southern Mississippi. The author is from Mississippi and graduated from Natchez High School this authors credibility comes from the fact that this author was a part of the things they addressed. The author is an athlete who has played three sports in high school and two sports and college the authors addresses situations they’ve had with coaches both good and bad and how those situations had both positive and negative effects which give insight on what works well with athletes and what athletes are looking for from their coaches. The author also gives accounts of situations they grew up dealing with and how having a mentor and someone who was positive in their life kept them motivated to want more out of life and to give their all in whatever they do. The author’s purpose for this paper seemed to be that they wanted understanding of people as to why they’ve chose to make this life choice. The intended audience for this paper seem to be for anyone who wants to know why the author choice to get a degree in this field. The writer seems to just be looking for understanding and seem to be looking for an audience with compassion for children. The writers tone is very concerned and very compassionate. The writer didn’t use slang but by the way in which the author wrote they assumed the writers would be college students like them. After reading this paper I feel the author really made their point they gave answers to all questions and really showed why they felt it was so important. The author could have went into greater detail to make the paper more efficient.

Blog 1

Hi my name is Ke’Airra Jones I’m a senior at the University of Southern Mississippi where I’m majoring in IDS. My two areas of concentration are Child and Family Studies and Coaching.  I currently work at Chuck E. Cheese but I plan to coach and start my own nonprofit organization after I graduate. My previous experiences with writing I would say have been very inconsistent. The grades I receive most of the time while writing reflects the amount of time I’ve put into the paper an example of this is when I had to write a paper for my IDS foundation class about my two disciplines the first paper I received an A but because of my last minute efforts I received an F on the second one. The reason I received the bad grade was because I didn’t answer the questions correctly like I did on the previous paper before and because I was rushing and not paying attention the paper had a lot of grammar errors that I didn’t catch because I didn’t proof read my paper. I’ve never written anything for my professional workplace or any public documents. I love to write summaries, research papers, critiques, or anything dealing with philosophy. Writing sometimes fails for me because the things I write don’t always come across the way I need it to when I’m writing it down.  I plan to learn how to write better once I’ve finished taking this class.
